Roman Period Boat Found

A Roman period boat was found buried in sand near the shore of the Sea of Galilee north of Tiberias . After a period of restoration the boat was put on exhibit at the Yigal Allon Galilee Boat Museum at Kibbutz Ginosar on the west shore of the Sea of Galilee, north of Tiberias.

  1. I happened to be touring Israel-Palestine in the Spring of 1986 and well remember seeing the boat in its specially built, open-air immersion tank near the lake shore at Ginosar, mere weeks after its meticulous extraction from the lake-bed. The story of its survival, recovery and preservation is quite fascinating–after partial excavation, it was floated from its resting place in a cocoon of foam! It was only discovered because sub-par winter rains had left water levels in the Sea of Galilee at historic lows, when the boat’s ribs were spotted poking from the mud by local residents.
